Under the provisions of a new constitution accepted by a referendum in April 1992, the President and a new National Assembly are elected by universal suffrage. The President can be elected for a maximum of two 4-year terms. The unicameral legislature, the National Assembly, has 200 seats and is also elected for four years. Private Sector development is one of the key economic objectives of the current government led by President J.A. Kufuor. There is a new Ministry set up to oversee this aspect of the government's programme for the 'golden age of business' in Ghana. This, together with the open and democratic administration of the government, has heightened international interest in Ghana.
